Axinotarsus ruficollis is a beetle from the subfamily of thehairpin beetle (Malachiinae).

features

The elongated beetles reach a length of 3.5 mm (males) and 3.7 mm (females). Unlike the other two occurring in Central Europe Axinotarsus TYPES is pronotum colored solid red. The head and elytra have a black basic color with a metallic bluish or greenish sheen. The tips of the wing cover are colored bright red or yellowish. The antennae are brownish to black, the legs almost completely black. The females are less slender. In contrast to the males, the abdomen of the females protrudes beyond the rear end of the elytra.

distribution

Axinotarsus ruficollis is widespread in Europe. Their distribution area extends from the Iberian Peninsula and Italy across Central Europe to southern Scandinavia. The species is absent in the British Isles.

Way of life

The heat-loving beetle species can be found on flowering grasses, mostly on sunny forest edges. There they suck on pollen. The beetles fly from June to early August.
