Axminster carpet

A loom was developed in Axminster for high-quality carpet production. In 1755 Thomas Whitty founded a carpet factory in the village. Carpets from Axminster have red cotton as a distinguishing feature , which is sewn into the edges of the carpet on the underside. The carpets were knotted from wool with a symmetrical knot, on a woolen warp and with an intermediate weft of flax or hemp. The pattern was similar to the carpets of the Savonnerie or floral. These carpets met the taste of the rich nobility and were soon to be seen everywhere in country houses. The factory closed in 1835 with the advent of industrial weaving machines. Harry Dutfield started building a new factory in 1937. Today it belongs to Wilton Carpets.

The name Axminster carpet stands for all carpets with a velvety surface. Pole scraping and scissors create an even surface, which improves the shine, feel and appearance of the goods. Today three different manufacturing processes are summarized under the name:

  • Chenille-Axminster,
  • Royal-Axminster and
  • Greifer-Axminster, whereby the weave of the Greifer-Axminster is the most important and most common manufacturing process.
