In chemical nomenclature , the prefix Aza- is used to indicate that one substance has been replaced by a nitrogen atom compared to another substance (parent compound). Conversely, the similar prefix "Deaza-" or "Desaza-" denotes the replacement of a nitrogen atom in a parent compound with a carbon atom. If necessary, a preceding number indicates which methine group (CH) has been replaced, e.g. B. in the parent compound anthracene (see Fig.).

The prefix is ​​part of the Hantzsch-Widman nomenclature .
