The Azadegan League ( Persian ليگ آزادگان) is the second highest division in Iranian football after the Iranian Pro League . It was introduced for the 2001/2002 season after the decision of the Iranian Football Association IRIFF in 2000.
Until 2001, the Azadegan League was the top division in Iran. But when a greater professionalization was desired, the Iranian Football Association re-established the Iranian Pro League as the top division. The two-part second division was then named Azadegan League.
It consists of two geographically separated leagues. The winner of a season is promoted to the Iranian Pro League and the second-placed decide in the relegation on the third promoted. Accordingly, three teams from the Iranian Pro League are relegated. The thirteenth and fourteenth of the two Azadegan Leagues are relegated.
The teams of the Azadegan League have the right to start the Hazfi Cup , the national cup competition in Iranian football.
