Conrad von Pappenheim (born April 10, 1534 at Rotenstein Castle ; † July 30, 1603 in Tübingen ), also called Conrad I. von Pappenheim , was an imperial colonel from the von Pappenheim family .

Life

Conrad von Pappenheim was one of five sons of Wolfgang von Pappenheim († 1558) and his wife Margareta von Roth († 1555). He was born in 1534 at Rotenstein Castle, today near the Rothenstein district near Bad Grönenbach . In the distribution of the inheritance after the death of his father, Conrad was only compensated with money. He entered the court service under Emperor Ferdinand I and carried it out under Maximilian II and Rudolf II . In 1563 he built the Lower Castle in Bad Grönenbach together with his three brothers Wolfgang, Christoph and Philipp von Pappenheim . On October 23, 1572 Conrad von Pappenheim received the written promise of Emperor Maximilian II to the "Expectanz" of the County of Stühlingen , Castle and Lordship Höwen , as well as the city of Engen . When the last descendant of the Count von Lupfen , who had been resident there, died in 1582, Conrad von Pappenheim occupied Hohenlupfen Castle and the city of Engen. By occupying the goods to which he was legally entitled, he drew the envy of other nobles who had some influence at the court of Emperor Rudolf II. For this reason, Conrad von Pappenheim was arrested on March 1, 1591 and held captive in Hohentübingen Castle. In 1594, Conrad von Pappenheim tried to prove his innocence with the help of a petition, but this was unsuccessful. Conrad von Pappenheim died in captivity in 1603.

In the town church of Engen there is an epitaph for Conrad von Pappenheim and his wife Catharina von Lamberg , which was built by his son Maximilian.
