The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Engen is the local parish church and the seat of the dean . It is under the patronage of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary . Today the parish church of Engen belongs to the pastoral care unit Oberer Hegau in the archdiocese of Freiburg .

Building history

Testimonies from all stylistic epochs have been preserved in the church since it was built in the first half of the 13th century. The limited building site directly on the city wall resulted in an almost square base for the east-facing basilica with a flat end of the choir. The tower on the northwest corner is a converted fortification tower of the city wall. The central portal with a crucifixion group and sculptures on the north portal also date from the Romanesque period .

Originally built as the patronage church of the Lords of Hohenhewen , it was first mentioned as a parish church in 1364. In 1442, under the Count of Lupfen , who also used the church as a burial place, the Gothic remodeling began. Pointed arcades were placed on top of the Romanesque columns and the tower, west facade and roofs were raised. The construction date of 1496 is on the southern half-column of the first nave arcade.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the baroque style was still used today . In the 17th century, the aisles were given a new vault, the choir was enlarged and the windows enlarged. The baptismal font dates from 1618. In 1664 the choir stalls were made by the two local master carpenters Johannes Schneider and Thomas Hecke. From 1746 to 1747 the central nave was also newly vaulted. The stucco work is by Johann Rees, the painting in the choir by Johann Christoph Achert, who together with Johann Baptist Kuster designed “The Last Judgment” as a monumental fresco on the triumphal arch. The high altar, which was created in 1818/19 by the Sigmaringer court painter Fidelis Welz, is already characterized by classicism . The church contains other high quality works of art from all eras, in particular the tombs of the local nobility, the Counts of Lupfen and the Counts of Pappenheim .

From May 2011 to October 2012 the church was extensively renovated inside and out. Above all, the roof structure was reinforced and the church was statically secured. In addition, the roof on the south side was re-covered.
