Azizus (Emesa)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Azizus ( Greek  Ἄζιζος Azizos ; † 54) was Prince of Emesa on the Orontes in the 1st century AD .

Azizus was the older son of his predecessor Sampsigeramos II († after 42). He converted to Judaism in order to marry Drusilla , a daughter of King Herod Agrippas I of Judea . When Azizus died in 54, his younger brother Sohaemus became Prince of Emesa. His widow Drusilla married the Roman procurator of Judea, Marcus Antonius Felix . Whether she left Azizus shortly before his death or only afterwards turned to Felix is controversial.
