Sohaemus (Emesa)
Gaius Iulius Sohaemus († after 72) was the last known prince of Emesa and king of Sophene .
Sohaemus was the younger son of Prince Sampsigeramos II of Emesa. In 54 he succeeded his brother Azizus in ruling the principality on the Orontes . In addition, the Roman emperor Nero appointed him king of Sophene, who had previously been part of Armenia and apparently became again around 60. Like his father, Sohaemus was called the " Great King ".
In Jewish War Sohaemus of Emesa fought on the Roman side. 66 he took part in the siege of Jerusalem by Cestius Gallus , the Year of the Four Emperors 69 he supported Vespasian and 70, he accompanied his son Titus in the conquest of Jerusalem . In 72 he took part in a punitive expedition led by Caesennius Paetus against Antiochus IV of Commagene . His further life is not known; probably under Vespasian's son Domitian (81–96), Emesa was incorporated into the province of Syria .
Sohaemus was a patron of the temple city of Heliopolis and was awarded the ornamenta consularia by the Romans .
