The oil mill in the Aargau community of Böttstein is the only fully functional oil mill in the region. The water wheel once drove the oil mill or the attached sawmill. Historical oil extraction can still be demonstrated here today. A system of wooden gears transmits the water force on the pan mill (grinding of nut kernels), which crusher (disruption of seed), the agitator and the actual press.

Together with these commercial enterprises, which are also operated by hydropower, the former grain mill and the associated outbuildings form a closed group of rural commercial buildings and are listed as municipal protection objects in the building and use regulations of Böttstein as substance protection objects.

history

The first documented mention of the Böttsteiner Mühlen goes back to the year 1389. Jakob Geissberger acquired the mills in 1835, which were structurally in a very poor condition, and converted them. In the 1950s, Eduard Keller took over the mill and - after a severe winter - gave it up again in 1962. Two large fat and oil works bought the disused plant in 1967, restored the building and donated the operation to the Historical Association, which is still responsible for the maintenance of the mill, which is under cantonal monument protection . The mill equipment in the grinding room was removed between 1989 and 2002 and the grinding cellar was converted into living space in the years that followed. It is still put into operation one to three times a month for demonstrations.
