Børge Mogensen (born April 13, 1914 in Ålborg , † October 5, 1972 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish furniture designer.

Career

Børge Mogensen completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter by 1934. He then studied from 1936 to 1941 at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen with Kaare Klint furniture architecture. He was employed by Klint from 1945 to 1947 as an assistant. In the 1940s, Mogensen developed two furniture series for children. From 1942 to 1950 he was head of the furniture department at the Association of Danish Consumer Cooperatives (FDB). Here he developed individual items and complete series that could be produced at consumer-friendly prices.

In 1950 Mogensen founded his own studio in Copenhagen and worked from then on for various Danish furniture manufacturers, mostly in cooperation with Andrew Hollingsworth . Some of his designs are manufactured and distributed by Fredericia Furniture A / S. Mogensen has worked with the company since 1955.

The "Spanish Chair" by Mogensen

His style is similar to that of his teacher Kaare Klint. Like him, Mogensen developed modular designs that could be used for multiple purposes. His aim was to create furniture for "average families" that would meet their needs and financial capabilities. He developed furniture for every room in an apartment. In his designs, which are described as functional, Mogensen borrowed from Chinese, Spanish and other traditional styles. The American Shaker furniture also served as inspiration.
