description

The landscape in which the cardinal and Bible translator Hieronymus devotes himself to penance exercises is characterized by the differentiated design of different natural forms. This artistic treatment of an environment made the small picture a model for several copies.

history

The painting was acquired for the National Gallery in 1996.

A copy, which is in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne , was published by Ernst Buchner as a work by Albrecht Altdorfer without knowing the model . The error confirms the affinity of the original to the Danube School .

Back of the painting

Picture on the back

On the back of his painting, Dürer painted an exploding celestial body in 1494 or around 1497. This could be a reference to the Ensisheim meteorite fall on November 7th, 1492, which Dürer probably heard and seen when he was in Basel, about 40 km away as the crow flies.
