Books Kruger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Books Krüger was a traditional bookshop in downtown Dortmund .

The company Bücher Krüger goes back to the publishing house founded by Christian Leonhard Krüger in which the "Dortmunder Wochenblatt" appeared with an initial print run of 600 copies.

In 1833 the Krüger publishing house took over Nedermannsche Druckerei. In addition to the Dortmunder Wochenblatt, which appeared from 1847 under the name "Dortmunder Anzeiger", the satirical magazine Kladderadatsch and specialist books were printed here. Until 1868 the publishing house also had a lending library, originally the private collection of the Nedermann children, with more than 10,000 books.

Kruger Passage

Since 1912, the now defunct bookstore was located on Westenhellweg in Dortmund in the Krügerpassage so named after the bookstore . In addition, illustrated books on the history of the city of Dortmund are published by Krüger Verlag.

From 1906 the Krüger family, together with Friedrich Wilhelm Ruhfus, published the Dortmunder General-Anzeiger , which was the largest national daily newspaper outside of Berlin until the Second World War . After the National Socialists seized power , the left-liberal General-Anzeiger was discontinued and the working capital was confiscated by the Gestapo.

After the complete destruction of the business premises, the bookstore was reopened in 1946, initially in a private room. In 1948 the company returned to its old location in the Krüger-Passage on Westenhellweg. Krüger Verlag specialized in specialist publications for industry and medicine. Lecture directories and bibliographic paperbacks for the University of Dortmund and the Pädagogische Hochschule Ruhr were also published.

Since the establishment of a large branch of the Mayersche bookstore in Dortmund city center, the traditional bookstore has recorded a continuous decline in sales. In 2005 the company achieved a turnover of 8.6 million euros and was 59th among the largest German bookshops.

On October 11, 2006, the acquisition of Bücher Krüger by Mayersche Buchhandlung was announced.

As announced on May 23, 2008, Bücher Krüger was due to close on January 31, 2009. A new lease could not be concluded with the owner of the property, who was the previous owner of Bücher Krüger. The bookstore ultimately closed on January 24, 2009.
