Book pirates

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The book pirate e. V. was founded in 2002 in Lübeck. The association makes it its business to get children and young people enthusiastic about books. With the book pirates, children and young people can read, write, perform and organize the world of literature and put their own creative ideas into practice. In the children's and youth groups, which take place regularly in the children's literature house, the children and in a team learn to work together and to responsibly carry out their own projects on the subject of literature. The book pirates are also involved in several projects beyond the children's literature house to promote reading. Since 2018, they have hosted the North German Reading Promotion Congress every two years.

Children's literature house

The children's literature house is located in the old town building on Fleischhauerstr. 71 in Lübeck. The book pirates have set up rooms for children and youth groups and an event room in the children's literature house. There the young people can try out their own event formats and carry out projects such as the Lübeck Youth Book Days. Overall, the Book Pirates Festival, a literature festival for children, takes place there once a year.

The charity bookshop is located on the ground floor of the children's literature house, where 40 volunteers sell donated books. The proceeds from the charity shop support the educational work in the children's and youth groups of the book pirates.

The children's literature house is unique in Germany because the young people have a say in the design of the children's literature house. It is not only about the interior design, but above all about the content and the educational offer.

Pedagogical work in the children's literature house

In the children's literature house, young people write, read, discuss and bring stories to life. With the book pirates, they are encouraged to get actively involved and implement their ideas independently. Over ten children and youth groups with different focuses on the subject of reading and writing from 8-19 years. Every year around 280 group meetings and 70 workshops for children and young people take place in the rooms of the children's literature house.

One of the most important groups is the editorial staff of the Blue Page. At www.die-blaue-seite.de, young people between the ages of 12 and 19 publish reviews of young people's books and interview well-known authors. The best-known interviewees include Cornelia Funke and John Green . Another youth group deals with the organization of the Lübeck youth book days. The young people plan a youth literature festival according to their own wishes for a year and invite authors, actors and voice actors for readings from their favorite youth books. Every year at the Book Pirate Festival, the author-explorers award a young author the Golden Book Pirate . The group of authors, in which young people receive input on the subject of writing and exchange ideas about the texts they have written, has existed the longest. The children and young people play a key role in the selection of what is on offer for children and young people in the children's literature house. You decide which new children and youth groups and workshops are offered.

All of the book pirates' projects are financed by donations.
