Hui Boo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hui Buh is the main character in the radio play series of the same name on the Europa label and in the book series Hui Buh - Das Schloßgespenst by Eberhard Alexander-Burgh .

Background to the radio play series

After the series was initially successfully run on the radio in several countries, a long-playing record was released in 1969 (with the later permanent line-up Hans Clarin as Hui Buh). At that time, the radio play division of Europe, which was launched in 1965, was still in its infancy despite some initial success with fairy tale radio plays. After the completion of Hui Buh, there were brief irritations about the payment method for the speakers' fees, so that Hans Clarin, who had already had bad experiences elsewhere, confiscated the finished tapes and only released them when he received his fee in the form of cash had been paid. Then the record could be mixed and released without thinking about a sequel.

When a second audio drama record was finally released, Helmut Kolar first played the title role, but when the series was continued with Clarin in the 1970s, another version of this second episode appeared, in which Kolar's voice was subsequently replaced by Clarins.

A total of 23 radio plays and 7 books were created. The episodes 1 to 15 appeared as LP / MC and from 16 they appeared only as MC. Episode 1 was directed by Konrad Halver , the cover design was carried out by Marion Langeheineken and Benito Tonon. Heikedine Körting took over the direction of the second episode . Most of the covers were then created by Hans Möller (episodes 2 to 15). In 1981 Michael Schanze and Clarin released a single called Ariola 103160 with the title Hui Buh das Schloßgespenst / Mitternacht auf Schloß Burgeck , the single was produced by Ralph Siegel . From 1999 to 2006, all episodes were released on CD and MC again as part of the Return of the Classics program , with the covers of episodes 16 to 23 being redesigned by the illustrator Firuz Aşkın . Hans Clarin, who always underlined a pitiful and tragic component in his design of the cheeky squawking figure and thus contributed significantly to the lasting success of the series, played shortly before his death in the film based on themes from the radio play series, but not as a croaking castle ghost, but in the role of the castellan .

characters

Original series (episodes 1 through 23)

Hui Boo
The only officially approved ghost at Burgeck Castle with a rusty rattle chain. Originally Hui Buh was a knight named Baldwin . But one day the knight was caught cheating during the card game Schwarzer Peter and then cursed by one of his angry playmates to be the castle ghost Hui Buh . Since that day the ghost has been haunted every night between midnight and 1 a.m. When the opportunity arises, the ghost takes revenge on the descendants of the knight Ottokar with a malicious spook , but afterwards has to admit contrite that it was wrong, because he was actually cursed by knight Adolar . Hui Buh lives in Burgeck's bat tower and sleeps in his rotten wooden chest during the day. In the bat tower, Hui Buh also keeps his haunted costumes and his book Haunted Made Easy for everyone . From a literary point of view, the Knight Baldwin is a quote from Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes , while the ghost is an homage to The Ghost of Canterville by Oscar Wilde . The latter is particularly evident in the frequent lack of luck when haunted, which brings Hui Buh into the greatest difficulties and thus turns the castle ghost into a tragicomic figure. Hui Buh is a master of disguise and has a large repertoire of disguises, which he uses more or less in keeping with the planned hauntings. The disguises most frequently mentioned in the radio plays are: Hugo, the coughing executioner, the monster with rolling eyes, the scarlet avenger (also: the purple avenger), the starved robber, gallows rope, the chalky-white abbot, the cross-eyed coachman, Mumm, the head-butcher, the terrible, fearful beard, the thundering Daniel, the clattering gravedigger and the knight without fear or blame.
teller
Aside from Hans Clarin himself, Hans Paetsch is the only narrator to be heard in all 23 episodes of the original series. Each episode begins with a dialogue between Hui Buh and the narrator, in which the main characters are introduced and the existence of Hui Buh is explained. The narrator then introduces the plot of the respective episode and, with his subsequent descriptions and comments, creates connecting elements between the individual dialogue scenes of the actors.
King Julius 111.
Julius is heir to Schloss Burgeck and Hui Buh's best friend . Originally, Hui Buh was anything but enthusiastic that Julius was moving into Burgeck Castle, but his opinion changed very quickly when they discovered a shared passion for good food and good wine. Due to the fact that the series was produced over several years and the desired speakers were not always available when they were needed, the role of King Julius 111 was taken over by various speakers: Michael Weckler , Claus Wilcke , Wolfgang Kieling and Peter Kirchberger . The latter was occasionally heard in various guest roles.
Queen Konstanzia (also Konstantia)
She is the wife of King Julius and is described as beautiful. Just like the role of King Julius 111, the role of Queen Constanceia had to be filled with different speakers; Ingrid Andree and Marianne Kehlau took on this role . Only in the second episode, Hui Buh, the castle ghost in new adventures , did the folk actress Gerda-Maria Jürgens , who became known to a large television audience primarily through broadcasts from the Cologne Volkstheater Millowitsch and some episodes of the crime series Stahlnetz .
The castellan
He has lived at Burgeck Castle for many years and is no longer impressed by Hui Buh's ghosts. His duties include cooking, cleaning and all kinds of janitorial work. In addition to Hui Buh himself and the narrator, the role from the speaker's point of view is the third constant in the radio play series of the original editions. Except in the first two episodes, in which the castellan was spoken by Konrad Mayerhoff in episode 1 and by Helmo Kindermann in episode 2, Andreas von der Meden took over the role in all other episodes .
Servatius Sebaldus
Official of the ghost authority. A typically over-correct officer who keeps an eye on the permit conditions for Hui Buh's haunted license and at times objected to it. Servatius Sebaldus appears in two episodes: Hui Buh and the great Spukschau (episode 5) and Hui Buh and the gruesome curse (episode 16). The spokesman for Servatius Sebaldus was Hans Hessling in both episodes (he also speaks the role of necromancer in the episode Hui Buh in the dark midnight forest (episode 15) )

In addition to the main roles, the supporting roles were also filled with top-class and well-known names. Gisela Trowe , Hellmut Lange , Franz-Josef Steffens , Ernst von Klipstein , Karl-Ulrich Meves , Volker Brandt and Christian Rode , among others , gave their voices to various characters.
