Stage combat , theater fencing , stage fencing or Scenic fencing (engl. Stage combat or stage fight ) is the representation of force in film , television and theater under the direction of a fencing master stage or stage combat choreographers . The names are not protected in Germany, while an umbrella organization exists for the English fight director .

Stage combat is carried out by trained actors or action actors for stage, film and television. For the safety of the performers and the audience, stage-specific fighting techniques are used that have to be rehearsed and monitored by a stage combat master.

Stage or scenic fencing is just one of the stage-specific fighting branches that require special training. In practice it often turns out that sport fencing is a conceivably inadequate or even a hindrance to scenic fencing. One reason for this is the difference in objective: In sport fencing you want to defeat an opponent; who scored the first hit can usually only be recognized by the flashing indicator lamp. Stage fencing, on the other hand, is not about getting a hit as quickly as possible. Here you work within the framework of a fixed choreography, with partners and with the aim of presenting one or more phrase d'armes in a way that is understandable and dramaturgically developed for the viewer. There are separate notation procedures for this. Here, the fencing 20th century rarely asked rather fencing techniques and weapons from ancient times to come until the 18th century used -.. From the spathe to Hofdegen . (The historical combat groups also deal with these techniques in a sporty way.)

When showing fencing scenes from the 17th / 18th centuries Century ( coat and sword style) is fought with blunt historical or sporting weapons. Preference is given to this sport saber or sports sword with French handle (without grip). For acoustic processing, you can cut holes or slits in the bell of the weapon so that the battle sounds realistic. If, on the other hand, you fight with the heavier rapier , it is not uncommon for a small shield , a left-hand dagger ( main gauche ) or simply a coat to be carried in the left hand .

Fencing can be done as cut or stitch fencing (or a mixture of both styles). In stage fencing, slash fencing is preferred. On the one hand it is (somewhat) safer, on the other hand it has a greater visual impact. It is controversial among experts whether stage fencing or sport fencing is closer to historical fencing. For sport fencing, the fact that the fight is open-ended, one does not have to be afraid of hits and is fought without frills, as well as the trained perception, which is mostly only simulated in theater fencing. The advantage of stage fencing is that the weapon is usually heavier and can not only be "tipped" towards the target, but has to be pulled through. The extensive immobilization, fixation and disarming techniques that do not even exist in sport speak in favor of stage fencing. To make matters worse, the agility school of sport fencing cannot be transferred to other martial arts and is itself a massively regulated variant of the classical fencing school of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There are also massive substantive and technical differences between classical, dance-based stage fencing and modern film fencing, which is largely based on Asian martial arts, which is far more common today.

Other types of stage combat include unarmed combat (unarmed combat, i.e. domestic violence, bar and street fights, etc.), all kinds of firearms or Asian fighting techniques.

Anything that is classified as too dangerous for actors as physical confrontation or action falls into the separate area of stunt , which, however, overlaps with stage combat. Stage combat masters and stunt coordinators often work together or, ideally, are both in one person.

In the meantime there are also opportunities in Germany to devote oneself to the subject of stage combat in workshops .
