The theater foreman, often called the stage manager in everyday parlance , is the link between the technical management and the stage workers of a theater company . People who carry out this demanding job have generally learned a technical and manual profession. Preferred occupations are carpenter, electrician and metal worker. The stage master usually begins his theater career as a stage worker. With appropriate probation, he has the opportunity to advance to a side master or machinist. This means that he is responsible for one side - the left or the right - of the stage area. The machinist for the upper and lower machinery is responsible for operating and monitoring the movements of the upper and point hoists as well as the movable and automatically controlled stage elements. This division of the work areas is particularly necessary for the respective theater performances. The side master organizes the technical modifications before and during the performances. He determines and monitors the work processes of the stage workers assigned to him.

To become a stage master, several years of stage experience and additional training with a subsequent examination are necessary. Until the mid-1990s, this examination was carried out by various regional councils in individual federal states. Today there are regular apprenticeships according to the Vocational Training Act with the possibility of the subsequent master craftsman examination z. B. as certified Master / Certified Master for event technology, specializing in stage / studio or lighting (short form: event master ) after several years of professional experience. Various courses in theater technology are also possible. This in-depth training includes in-depth knowledge in the areas of statics, stage electronics and safety technology.

Stage managers are differentiated between the theater and studio area. There is also the stage master for motion picture theater.
