The town houses on Molkenmarkt are a historicizing row of houses on Berlin's oldest market square.

location

At the Spree crossing between Berlin and Cölln, the Mühlendamm flows into the traditional market square, which was also called Alter Markt (Ouder Markt) until the 17th century .

history

The north side of the Molkenmarkt was densely built with town houses until 1935, when a new bridge over the Mühlendamm and the National Socialist plans for a Gauforum in front of the town hall made it necessary to demolish the houses. The planned new building was not implemented until 1945.

It was not until 1984 to 1986 that the whey market was rebuilt as part of the construction of the Nikolaiviertel for the 750th anniversary of Berlin. The architect Günter Stahn created a free collage of historical houses from old Berlin, which is based on the historical form . Wherever there was no or only poor building documentation, Stahn used well-documented old town houses from old Berlin and old Cölln .
