Town houses on Marktstrasse (Hückeswagen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The town houses on Marktstrasse in Hückeswagen are in the old town . They are part of a larger listed complex . The view of the Pauluskirche in Marktstrasse is also called the “postcard view ” because it is a very popular motif for photographers.

Marktstrasse runs from the corner of Friedrichstrasse and Islandstrasse (popularly the corner is also known as “Kreuzstrasse”) in a gentle incline up to Hückeswagen Castle . The ensemble of town houses in the back half of Marktstrasse (towards the castle) forms a closed unit. Some of the houses still have the old pulley brackets for transporting goods to the granaries. At the time it was built, many cloth weavers had settled in the street. Later the economic activity shifted to the cloth factories on the Wupper . The cloth weavers who had become wealthy built their villas on Bachstrasse, some of which can still be seen today.

Many houses on Markstrasse were badly damaged in various city fires in the 18th century. In a fire in 1760, however, the left side of Marktstrasse (Pauluskirche side) was not destroyed. The construction times of these houses date from the middle of the 16th century to the end of the 17th century. The destroyed right side was rebuilt by placing the foundation walls on the burned down houses. However, the house fronts are sometimes wider. The oldest documents still available today about the houses date from 1828, the so-called original cadastre.
