The Hückeswagen old town , officially also known as the historic town center Hückeswagen , is an ensemble of buildings in the town of Hückeswagen , Oberbergischer Kreis . It is completely under monument protection. The most important building in the old town is Hückeswagen Castle , which was built by the formerly independent Counts of Hückeswagen. All three churches, the Pauluskirche, the Johanniskirche and the Catholic parish church, are located in the old town. The city is visually characterized by the slab of houses.

Expansion and function

The old town extends for a maximum length of about half a kilometer along Marktstrasse, it is bounded by the Catholic Parish Church of St. Mary of the Assumption in the south, the end of Islandstrasse or Kolping House in the east, the castle in the north and Marktstrasse in the west . The streets of Marktstrasse, Kölner Strasse, Marktberg, Bongarzstrasse, Weierbachstrasse, Waidmarktstrasse and Islandstrasse belong to the old town. In the middle of the Iceland road is one of the monuments of Hückeswagen, the cloth weaver. It recalls the era of the Hückeswagen cloth weaving industry . The old town consists of a mixture of residential and commercial buildings. The latter mainly consist of small shops or restaurants.

tourism

After the Bevertalsperre , the old town of Hückeswagen is the second major attraction for tourists. The city of Hückeswagen has therefore set up a so-called Altstadtrundweg. This leads past the town houses on Islandstrasse , the house of Vinzenz von Zuccalmaglio , the Steengaden with the old Reformation pastorate, the Catholic parish church with a former Catholic pastorate, the town houses on Marktstrasse with the birthplace of Maria Zanders , the Protestant Paulus Church , the castle with Local history museum and the Bachstraße with their houses of the cloth manufacturers .

Current development

Islandstraße was once the city's most important business center, but was later replaced by the shops on Etapler Platz . However, there are still many retail stores there. The so-called city street has been built since 2009. The aim of this inner bypass is to better connect the old town and the Etapler Platz business center. So far, both parts have been separated by the busy federal highway 237 . The old town is increasingly the scene of larger events, for example the summer bobsleigh race or the old town festival.
