Citizen solar system
In Germany, a citizen solar system is usually a photovoltaic system operated jointly by private individuals , and less often a solar thermal system. It is a participation community in which the individuals invest contributions in order to be able to build and operate a common solar system.

The motivation of the operators of citizen solar systems is typically the desire to promote renewable energies , and in Germany often also the goal of making a capital investment that is well secured for 20 years . This security is guaranteed in Germany by the state-guaranteed feed-in tariff through the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) . Additional security can be achieved through manufacturer guarantees and so-called all - risk insurance . The roof areas that are used by the citizen solar systems are often owned by the local authorities , especially municipalities, or by industrial companies that want to contribute to the energy transition by providing the corresponding areas and receive a lease.
organization
Citizen solar systems are often operated in the legal form of a company under civil law , more rarely a KG or a cooperative (see Citizens Energy Cooperative ). Often a (sometimes non-profit ) association or a citizens' initiative is the initiator that organizes and additionally secures the participations. In some cases, citizen solar associations have also founded a GmbH or AG as an operating company, such as Green City e. V. in Munich or the Bürgererkraftwerke e. V. in Saarland.
The shareholders usually participate at the beginning with a cash contribution. Profit sharing is based on the proceeds generated from the sale of the electricity generated. This is easy to calculate thanks to the state-set feed-in tariff based on the EEG. Often the investment can be financed by subsidized loans from KfW and other banks. There is a surplus for the shareholders, which is distributed proportionally after deducting the administrative expenses.
