The Salzgitter Community Foundation is an independent institution founded on June 15, 2002 to promote various charitable and benevolent purposes in the area of ​​the city of Salzgitter . With a start-up capital of 684,400 euros, it was the second largest community foundation in Germany when it was founded . The foundation does not touch its share capital of 800,000 euros (as of 2011), the interest is distributed annually to charitable projects. This was 400,000 euros up to 2010.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Salzgitter Community Foundation is currently (2020) Helmut Knebel, who was Lord Mayor of the City of Salzgitter from 2001 to 2006. The chairman of the board is Rainer Krause (managing director of WEVG ), his deputies are Christian Heinrich (managing director of Glückauf Immobilien GmbH) and Roland Staab.

The "Foundation Day" is held regularly once a year. Donations are made to charitable projects and organizations. Every citizen can participate. Every guest is expected to donate at least 100 euros. The meals on this day are sponsored. The foundation dinners so far in recent years have each generated revenue of around 10,000 euros.

For the first time, a city breakfast in Salzgitter took place in the courtyard in front of Salder Castle in 2008 , which is organized by the community foundation and has been held annually since then. The foundation run at Salzgittersee, which has been held since 2007, is an officially approved fun run by the Lower Saxony Athletics Association .
