The Bürgli , originally called the Obere Bürgli , is a free-standing, late Classicist apartment building in the middle of a large green area in Zurich's Enge district .

The building sits enthroned on a hill, on the southwest side of which there is a 3000 square meter vineyard , next to the Enge church at Bürglistrasse 18. Thanks to its outstanding location, it is visible from afar over the roofs of the city. The massive structure rises over three full floors under a slightly sloping hipped roof; the façades are symmetrically structured in a contemporary way, and inside there are spacious rooms.

history

The name comes from the original tower-like building, a bourgeois country estate, which was mentioned as early as 1525 and was replaced in 1834 by today's late classicist building.

Bürgli

It has been owned by the Engemer branch of the Landolt family since 1643 . From 1876 to 1882 it served as the residence of the poet and politician Gottfried Keller and his sister, who shared an apartment on the second floor. Keller wrote to Theodor Storm : "I prefer to stay in the house for weeks when I don't have to go out because of the movement." Keller wrote the second version of his novel The Green Heinrich there in 1879 and 1880 . Landscape architect Gustav Ammann , painter Daniel Garbade and musician Daniel Schnyder grew up on this former country estate.
