The Būtingė Oil Terminal is a terminal for the loading of oil in Būtingė on the Baltic Sea coast , near the Lithuanian-Latvian border. It is operated by the Lithuanian company ORLEN Lietuva . It is a sea-based SPM terminal ( single point mooring buoy ) about 7.5 km from the coast ( location ), where the tankers are loaded and unloaded at a buoy connected to the refinery on the mainland via pipelines .

history

From 1993 a predecessor of the current AB ORLEN Lietuva , AB Nafta , planned to build a terminal. AB Būtingės nafta was founded in 1995 and, after the reorganization of the Lithuanian oil industry in 1998, incorporated into the AB Mažeikių nafta group (now ORLEN Lietuva ). The terminal was opened on July 21, 1999.

Its operation is controversial over fears that oil might leak (which has already happened).

Since July 2006, the Būtingė oil terminal has been the only way through which the Mažeikių Nafta Group can obtain oil, as Transneft shut down the oil pipeline from Russia .
