B1 (Paralympics)

B1 is a functional classification for athletes that denotes the degree of disability relevant to competition in Paralympic sports .

Athletes classified according to B1 must meet the following conditions:

"Completely blind: no sensation of light in both eyes up to the sensation of light, but unable to perceive a hand movement in any distance or direction."

Derived starting classes

Paralympic athletes classified according to B1 are eligible to start in the following starting classes and sports:

  • Athletics (starting classes T11 / F11 )
  • Swimming (start classes S11 / SB11 / SM11 )

Special conditions for athletes classified according to B1 depending on the sport:

  • 5-a-side football (starting class B1): all field players must wear an opaque bandage or glasses
  • Nordic skiing (starting class B1) & Alpine skiing (starting class B1) / biathlon (starting class B1): guides drive ahead or behind, lead by shouting or radio
  • Athletics (starting classes T11 / F11): all athletes must wear an opaque bandage and, in the running competitions, need guides who run alongside with their arms tied to their arms; There are specific aids in the jumping and pushing competitions
  • Swimming (start classes S11 / SB11 / SM11): Athletes need a lifting aid at the end of the pool
