The BEE Book was a series of reference works on CD-ROM developed by Bertelsmann in the 1990s . The abbreviation “BEE” is derived from “Bertelsmann Electronic Edition”. As in the case of the Bertelsmann Universal Lexikon , the CD-ROM editions were usually based on well-known printed works that were enriched with multimedia content.

In contemporary reviews it is criticized that the additional offer of pictures and short videos in the BEE books is at the expense of the text quality. “When compared with a printed encyclopedia, the CD-ROM edition draws the short straw. Although the fall of the Berlin Wall is recorded three times in brilliant photo quality in the Bertelsmann Universal Lexicon, the portraits attached to the lexicon are only stick figure quality. "

As with Sony's Data Discman (see e-book reader ) and Sega Saturn , mini CD-ROMs with caddies are used in EBG (text and graphics, exception: Japan) and, more rarely, EBXA (text, graphics, sound, worldwide) .
