BLU-116
The BLU-116 ( B omb L ive U nit), and BLU-116 Advanced Unitary Penetrator (short AUP , German as advanced unified indenter ), is a bomb used by the armed forces of the United States as an improved bunker-busting weapon is used. The bomb was designed to destroy buried or buried targets.
The BLU-116 has the same shape, size and weight as the BLU-109 , which was developed in the 1980s. It can be attached to standardized NATO 762 mm suspension points. By the external adaptation to the established BLU-109 the bomb can be used without modifications to various carrier aircraft and with various control systems such as the GPS -based JDAM or laser-guided Paveway be equipped. It also has the same aerodynamics on the aircraft and flight characteristics after being dropped.
In contrast to the BLU-109, the BLU-116 has a softer outer jacket made of aluminum and a hard core made of a nickel- cobalt-steel alloy called 9430M . The penetration capacity is said to have been doubled compared to the BLU-109.
The version of the US Air Force is called GBU-24 C / B , which the US Navy as a GBU-24 D / B referred.
