BMD-20

The BMD-20 is a multiple rocket launcher system of the Soviet Union . The GRAU index is 8U33 . The missiles are called "MD-20F".

development

The system was developed in the late 1940s by GSKB Spetzmasch under the direction of WP Barmin . The BMD-20 was introduced to the Soviet National Forces in 1951. The system was eliminated from the Soviet armed forces in the mid-1970s and replaced by the more powerful BM-27 .

technology

A launcher frame with 4 rockets of 200 mm caliber was mounted on the three-axle truck " ZIS-151 " . A rocket launcher was able to fire all 4 rockets in 6 seconds. Reloading an empty launcher took 6–10 minutes. The rockets had a large dispersion and were therefore only suitable for combating area targets.

Missiles

The MD-20F rockets were propelled by solid fuel. The rockets had a tail unit with four fixed guide surfaces and were spin stabilized. A slight twist was given to the rocket at launch by the slightly twisted launcher frame. The rockets had a maximum fire speed of 535 to 590 m / s. Firing distance of 18.75 km. One rocket weighed 194 kg, of which 30.08 kg was attributable to the fragmentation warhead . Upon impact, the warhead created a crater 6.0 m in diameter and 3.1 m deep.

distribution

The system was used within the former Soviet Union . Exports went to some African countries and North Korea . The BMD-20 was in use in the exporting countries well into the 1980s. The systems are still used in North Korea.
