Baba (goddess)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baba (also called Ba'u ; ba-u 2 , where the character u 2 can also be read as ba 6 ) is a Sumerian mother goddess and city goddess of Lagaš and Girsu . She was the daughter of Gatumdu and thus the granddaughter of the supreme god of the Sumerian pantheon , An , who is also considered to be her father in part. Her husband was the state god of Lagaš, Ningirsu . Both have seven daughters.

Originally, Baba was probably a local mother goddess . She was especially venerated in Lagaš, but there was also a large temple in Ur . Sometimes she is called "Lady of Abundance". Later she was equated with the goddesses Gula and Nin'insina and worshiped as a healing deity far beyond Lagash's borders . She is sometimes considered the wife of Ninurta.
