The Baccalieu Island Ecological Reserve is a nature reserve off the northeast coast of the island of Newfoundland, which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . The reserve was provisionally established in 1991. In 1995 the protected area received its current status.
location
The protected area comprises the 5 km² Baccalieu Island and 18 km² of surrounding water. The island is 2.8 km off the northwest tip of the Avalon Peninsula . The municipality of Bay de Verde is located about 7 km southwest of the island. Between April 1st and October 31st, stricter regulations apply to access to the protected area.
fauna
The largest breeding colony of the wave runner ( Oceanodroma leucorhoa ) is located on Baccalieu Island . It consists of about 3.36 million breeding pairs. The birds are usually prey at sea during the day and only come to the island when it is dark. The island is also home to the second largest breeding colony of puffins in North America. It includes around 75,000 breeding pairs. Kittiwake , guillemot , thick-billed mum , razorbill and fulmar also occur on the island .
