Bacigalupo is a family dynasty of barrel organ builders in Berlin. The name is associated with the now valuable old barrel organs , which were built by various members of the Bacigalupo family and other employees in Berlin between 1879 and 1975 .

Companies

In the period from 1879 to 1975 there were several workshops in which at least one family member built barrel organs. Giovanni Battista Bacigalupo (* July 25, 1889, † July 10, 1978 in Berlin) is considered the founder of the family dynasty in barrel organ building. The pinned cylinder as a carrier of the music belonged to the barrel organ. Around 1920, the Bacigalupo Sons company produced a small number of larger street barrel organs with perforated ribbons. In almost a century of history, these organs dominated, and so a Bacigalupodre organ was simply called a Bacigalupo or a Baci.

One or more people named Bacigalupo were represented in the following companies:

  • Frati & Co (Co = Giovanni Battista Bacigalupo )
  • Cocchi Bacigalupo & Graffigna
  • G. Bacigalupo (three different company names of the Bacigalupo family)
  • Bacigalupo sons (end of company unknown)

Organ grinder

As a rule, barrel organ builders made instruments for beggars who roamed the backyards of Berlin with their barrel organs in order to earn their money. The Bacigalupos also made their instruments mainly for this group of people. Since the barrel organ could only play eight different songs, these were occasionally exchanged for little money and replaced with new, current music.
