A backspar is used to moor the boats to ships that are anchored in the roadstead .

The moored boat on the leash boats lying in the lee of the ship and therefore relatively quiet.

The backspar is held in the horizontal direction by the toppnant , the side bracing is done by the fore and aft girdle. The rope (stretch bone) stretched about one meter above the backspar is used to hold on when walking on the spar. You finally get to the boat via Jacob's ladder .
