As a topping lift is leash on a sailboat indicated that the spinnaker pole carries, that keeps upwards. Together with the spinnaker pole vang (also a line), the spinnaker pole is fixed in its approximately horizontal position. By jointly adjusting the toppnant and the spinnaker pole vang, the position of the spinnaker pole can be changed and the spinnaker trimmed .

In sailing ships the topping lift a rope , which serves the Rah at heel to trim (tilt) of the ship parallel to the water surface. It leads from the mast to the Rahnock (end of the yard).
