Bagrat Schin Cuba ( Abkhaz Баграт Уасыл-иҧа Шьынқәба ; Russian Баграт Васильевич Шинкуба * 12. May 1917 in Tschlou ; † 25. February 2004 in Sukhum ) was a Soviet - Abkhaz writer, poet, linguist, historian and politician.

Life

Bagrat Schinkuba was born in the Abkhazian village of Chlou . He studied at the Sukhumi Pedagogical Institute until 1939 . He then worked as a writer, historian and linguist and was also active in politics. He joined the CPSU in 1946 . From 1950 he published his first novels.

He also researched, among other things, the history and languages ​​of the Northwest Caucasian peoples , which include the Abkhazians , Circassians , Abasins and the Ubyches , which perished in the 20th century . From the beginning he was also active as a writer. In his novel In the Sign of the Crescent, he set a literary monument to the fate of the Ubychen .

From 1958 to 1979 he was chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Abkhaz ASSR .

Schinkuba has received several awards in the Soviet Union. He received the Order of Lenin twice , and in 1987 he was also awarded the honorary title of Hero of Socialist Labor .
