history
On February 4, 1932, the Agricultural Education Institute was founded by a decision of the People's Education Commission of the Abkhaz ASSR . In 1933 the Gorky State Pedagogical Institute Sukhumi was created , which was converted into the Abkhaz State University in 1979 by a resolution of the Ministry of Education of the Georgian SSR . The founding rector was Zurab Antschabadze. The university initially consisted of an Abkhazian, a Russian and a Georgian department. The demands of Georgian students to make the Georgian department a branch of Tbilisi University sparked riots in Sukhumi in 1989. After the armed conflict over Abkhazia and the country's de facto independence from 1993, a university in exile was established in Tbilisi . In 2006, the Abkhazian State University officially received the status of a self-governing (autonomous) university by a decree of the Abkhazian President.
Aleko Gwaramija, professor of physics and mathematics, member of the Abkhaz Academy of Sciences has been the rector of the university since 1989 .
There are eight faculties and 41 chairs. She is a member of the Association of Eurasian Universities . The inter-university exchange is currently limited - also due to the foreign policy isolation of Abkhazia - largely to the post-Soviet area. Russia naturally plays a special role in this. Since 2011 there has also been a partnership with the University of Urbino in Italy.
The buildings are located on the extreme southeastern outskirts of Sukhumi. Lectures are held in Abkhazian and Russian.
