Bah N'Daw (born August 23, 1950 in San ) is a Malian military and politician. He was the interim President of Mali from September 25, 2020 to May 26, 2021 . Between May 2014 and January 2015 he was Minister of Defense.

career

N'Daw comes from the Ségou region . He joined the Malian armed forces as a volunteer in 1973 and graduated from l'École militaire interarmes (EMIA) in Koulikoro that same year . In 1974 he went to the Soviet Union to receive training as a helicopter pilot.

In 1977, N'Daw became part of the Malian Air Force. There he served, among other things, as an adjutant to the Malian President Moussa Traoré . He resigned from this position in 1990 in protest of Traoré's wife's interference in government affairs. Under President Alpha Oumar Konaré , N'Daw served as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Malian Air Force between 1992 and 2002. In 1994 he graduated from the École de guerre in Paris. In 2003, N'Daw became Chief of Staff in the Malian Air Force. During his career, he also served as the Malian National Guard's deputy chief of staff. From 2008 until his retirement in 2012, he was head of the Veterans Affairs and War Victims Office. He retired with the rank of colonel.

On May 28, 2014, N'Daw succeeded Soumeylou Boubèye Maïga as Minister of Defense under President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta . During his tenure, he signed a defense agreement with France. He also worked on reorganizing the Malian armed forces. When Prime Minister Modibo Keita succeeded Moussa Mara in January 2015 , N'Daw left the post, allegedly because he disagreed with some conditions regarding the integration of deserting former fighters.

On September 21, 2020, after the coup against Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta a few weeks earlier, N'Daw was named president by a group of 17 people selected by the coup plotters. Assimi Goïta was appointed Vice President. Your interim government is to rule for 18 months after the 2020 coup in Mali. His inauguration took place on September 25, 2020. After taking office, N'Daw declared that he would fight against corruption and electoral fraud and that he would respect international agreements previously made. On September 27, N'Daw named Moctar Ouané Prime Minister.

In May 2021, Bah N'Daw, Prime Minister Moctar Ouané and Defense Minister Souleymane Doucouré were arrested by the military. Previously, Moctar Ouané's interim government had appointed a new cabinet by decree, in which the military - despite promises to the contrary - occupied strategically important positions, but some officers did not become part of the government. Bah N'Daw and Moctar Ouané resigned on May 26, 2021. They were then released. The UN Security Council had unanimously called for the safe, immediate and unconditional release of the politicians, as well as the immediate return of all Malian soldiers to their barracks.
