The President of the Republic of Mali is the head of state of the West African state of Mali . Last officiated Ibrahim Boubacar Keita as President was until in August 2020 deposed the Republic of Mali, by a military coup.

The duties of the President are currently being temporarily assumed by the Chairman of the National Committee for the Welfare of the People, Assimi Goita .

history

The office was created on June 20, 1960 after the country gained independence. Initially, however, the official title was not "President"; this changed several times over the years.

Constitutional position

According to Article 29 of the Malian Constitution, the President is the head of the state. He is the guardian of the constitution, embodies national unity and is a guarantor of national independence and territorial integrity. He also watches over the public authorities and ensures the continuity of the state.

Competencies

According to the constitution, the president has the following powers:

  • Appointment and dismissal of the Prime Minister
  • Appointment of the members of the government cabinet on the proposal of the Prime Minister
  • formal dissolution of Parliament with prior consultation with the Prime Minister
  • Supreme command of the armed forces
  • Signing of regulations and decrees of the government

choice

The President is elected by direct election for a term of 5 years. Re-election is possible once. Up to two rounds are allowed for voting. If the candidate misses an absolute majority of at least 50 percent of the votes in the first round , a new runoff election with the second-placed candidate is required. The election must take place between 21 and 40 days before the current president's term of office expires. Every applicant for the office must be of national, Malian origin and have fulfilled all of his or her civil duties. The law guarantees a free and proper election.
