The Esashi Station ( Jap. 江差駅 , Esashi-eki ) is a former railway station on the Japanese island of Hokkaido . It was located in Hiyama Sub-Prefecture, Esashi City, and operated from 1936 to 2014.
description
Esashi was the western terminus of the Esashi Line that began in Goryōkaku near Hakodate and has only run to Kikonai since 2014 . The station is south of the city center and faces south to north. Finally, he still had a track for passenger traffic, with the reception building on the west side of the facility. The route once led about 200 meters further north to a storage facility with goods shed , depot and turntable . This part is built over with residential houses today.
history
The Ministry of Railways opened the station on November 11, 1936, along with the 20.7 km Yunotai – Esashi section of the Esashi Line , which was thus completed. From 1960 to 1980, express trains ran between Hakodate and Esashi. In 1975 the Japanese State Railways replaced the previous wooden station building with a new concrete building. For cost reasons, the state railway stopped freight traffic on November 15, 1982, and checked baggage on March 14, 1985. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 .
On May 12, 2014, JR Hokkaido shut down the non-electrified part of the Esashi Line west of Kikonai, thereby also closing Esashi Station; Since then, a bus line operated by Hakodate Bus has taken over the development. The station building was demolished in November 2016, and two months later all the tracks in the city area were removed. A housing estate was then built on the site of the former train station.
