The Gōra station ( Japanese 強 羅 駅 , Gōra-eki ) is a train station and a mountain railway station on the Japanese island of Honshū , operated by the Hakone Tozan Tetsudō railway company . It is located in Kanagawa Prefecture in the Hakone City area .

description

Gōra is the western terminus of the 15 km long Hakone-Tozan Line . This standard-gauge mountain railway leads from Odawara via Hakone-Yumoto to here. The terminus is oriented from south to north and is located in the center of the tourist district of Gōra. To the west is the bottom station of the Hakone Tozan Cable Car , a narrow-gauge funicular railway 1.2 km in length up to Sōunzan. Both routes belong to the Hakone Tozan Tetsudō railway company , a company of the Odakyu Group . There are three bus stops around the station, from where several Hakone Tozan Bus lines run to various locations in the area.

The mountain railway has two tracks on a combined side and tongue platform , the roof of which is connected to the reception building. The funicular station, on the other hand, has a single track (with two side platforms) and is arranged at right angles to the station. The architecture of the reception building is modeled on that of an alpine refuge ; the gable roof is particularly striking . The building has served as a backdrop in numerous doramas and is also featured in the anime series Bakusō Kyōdai Let's & Go !! to see.

history

On June 1, the railway company Odawara Denki Tetsudō ( 小田原 電 気 鉄 道 ) opened the station, together with the Hakone-Tozan line to Hakone-Yumoto . The same company took the Hakone Tozan Cable Car to Sōunzan into operation on December 1, 1921 . The Great Kanto earthquake of September 1, 1923 caused severe damage. The mountain railway could not be put back into operation until November 24, 1924, the funicular on March 21, 1925. In 1928 the Odawara Denki Tetsudō was renamed Hakone Tozan Tetsudō and extended the Hakone-Tozan line seven years later to Odawara . In support of rationing measures during World War II , the government classified the funicular on February 10, 1944 as "non-urgent" and ordered its closure and dismantling. It was reopened on July 1, 1950, almost five years after the end of the war. In 1977 the station building was replaced by a new building.
