List of train stations in Lithuania |
The Klaipėda railway station is one of the main stations of the Lithuanian railway company Lietuvos geležinkeliai in the seaport city of Klaipeda ( Memel ).
history
The station was opened in 1875 when the Prussian railway line Tilsit – Memel was opened. In 1892 a route extension to Bajohren was opened. Small railways still operated from Memel to Plicken , Laugallen and Pöszeiten (opened in 1905). In the course of the First World War , a connection to the Lithuanian network was added, but this was soon cut by the new Lithuanian-Latvian border. Therefore, from 1925 to 1932, a line to Šiauliai was built, which has remained the most important rail link between Klaipėda and the Lithuanian hinterland to this day.
meaning
The railway is particularly important here for heavy goods traffic to and from the Baltic Sea port . For passenger transport, trains to Vilnius run via Šiauliai .
architecture
The station is located northeast of the city center and consists of an old, listed station building, which is now used for gastronomy, of a more modern red brick building with a striking tower. The city's important international bus station is located in the immediate vicinity of the train station .
