Lewisham Railway Station
Lewisham is a train station in the London Borough of Lewisham . It is an important local transport hub and is located on the border of the Travelcard tariff zones 2 and 3 on Station Road. In 2013, 8.192 million passengers used the station.
The station is served by Southeastern trains and is the southern terminus of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). It has the shape of a wedge station , which is why the track system is arranged in a Y-shape. All trains passing through here run from Charing Cross or London Bridge stations in the northwest. To the east the route runs towards Dartford and Medway , and to the south the suburban routes to Hayes and Orpington branch off . The terminus of the Docklands Light Railway is located in a semi-covered cut in the forecourt between the two branches of the railway. A bus station provides for the fine development.
The station was opened on July 30, 1849 by what was then the South Eastern Railway , along with the line between Bermondsey and Gravesend . With the commissioning of the line to Beckenham on January 1, 1857, Lewisham changed from a through station to a wedge station. The DLR station opened on November 20, 1999.
On December 4, 1957, the Lewisham train wreck killed 90 people and injured over a hundred more.
