During the British railway boom in the late 1830s, two different companies built lines in the area. The London and Croydon Railway (L&CR) opened a station on June 5, 1839 at the junction of New Cross Road and Hatcham Park Road. The South Eastern Railway (SER) followed on October 1, 1850 with a station at the junction of New Cross Road and Amersham Way. Both railway companies named their stations New Cross .

This confusing situation persisted until 1923 when both companies were absorbed by the Southern Railway . To avoid further confusion, the station on the Brighton line was renamed New Cross Gate , while the station on the Kent line kept its name. This also means that the platforms at this station are marked with letters instead of numbers, as is usual in London.

On December 1, 1884, the Metropolitan Railway (MR, now Metropolitan Line ) and the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR, now District Line ) began operating. The MDR ceased operations on July 31, 1905, the MR on December 2, 1906, so that the route was temporarily only used for freight traffic. From March 31, 1913, trains of the MR ran again on the now electrified East London Line. Since the closure of the St Mary's Curve at Whitechapel on October 5, 1941, the East London Line was operationally independent.

Between March 25, 1995 and March 25, 1998, the entire route was closed to all traffic due to renovation and modernization work. On December 22, 2007, the East London Line was closed again to modernize and extend it at both ends. Since April 27, 2010, the line has been open again after two and a half years of construction and is part of the London Overground.
