Surrey Quays is an underground station of the London Overground (until 2007 London Underground ) in the London Borough of Southwark . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 2 at the intersection of Lower Road and Redriff Road. In 2013, 2.044 million passengers used the station served by the East London Line .

history

After the opening of the station on December 7, 1869, the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway , which had a connection between its route network and the East London Line at New Cross Gate , carried out passenger services. On December 1, 1884, the Metropolitan Railway (MR, now Metropolitan Line ) and the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR, now District Line ) began operating. For the first three decades the station was called Deptford Road , on July 17, 1911 it was renamed Surrey Docks , a reference to the nearby Surrey Commercial Docks .

The MDR ceased operations on July 31, 1905, the MR on December 2, 1906, so that the route was temporarily only used for freight traffic. From March 31, 1913, trains of the MR ran again on the now electrified East London Line. Since the closure of the St Mary's Curve at Whitechapel on October 5, 1941, the East London Line was operationally independent. Since October 24, 1989, the station has been called Surrey Quays , named after the shopping center of the same name that opened its doors in the same year. This renaming initially met with criticism because many locals believed that their traditions were being erased. However, the name quickly caught on and the area around the former Surrey Docks is now commonly known as the Surrey Quays. Plans to stop the Jubilee Line or Fleet Line in Surrey Quays were never realized.

Between March 25, 1995 and March 25, 1998, the entire route was closed to all traffic due to renovation and modernization work. On December 22, 2007, the East London Line was closed again to modernize and extend it at both ends. Since April 27, 2010, the line has been open again after two and a half years of construction and is part of the London Overground. On December 9, 2012 followed the opening of a 2.5 kilometer link to Queens Road Peckham station on the South London Line ; this allows trains to run as far as Clapham Junction .
