Canada Water is an underground station of the London Underground and London Overground in the London Borough of Southwark . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 2 on Surrey Quays Road. The Jubilee Line and the East London Line cross here on two levels . In 2014, 11.81 million underground passengers used the station, plus 10.330 million overground passengers. The station is named after Canada Water .

history

Although the station is located on the East London Line, which has existed since 1869, it was only built in the last few years of the 20th century to create a transfer option to the eastern extension of the Jubilee Line. There was not enough space for this at the neighboring stations. The Albion Dock, part of the Surrey Commercial Docks, which has been closed since 1969, was once located here . Canada Water is the only station built in the planned extension of the Fleet Line, which was never built.

The platforms of the East London Line opened on September 17, 1999, those of the Jubilee Line followed a little more than two months later on November 20, 1999. On December 22, 2007, the East London Line was closed again to modernize and connect to lengthen both ends. The reopening took place on April 27, 2010; since then the East London Line has been part of London Overground.

architecture

The architect of the station was Roland Paoletti. A 25 meter high glass drum above the entrance area serves as an eye-catcher on the surface. It covers a deep opening that extends almost to the 22 meters deep platforms of the Jubilee Line. As a result, most of the station is illuminated by natural daylight. Next to the glass drum is a bus station, which also has a glass roof.

Buxton Water

On the occasion of the London Marathon on April 26, 2015, the station was renamed Buxton Water, the name of a mineral water, for one day. It was the first time in the history of London public transport that a station had been renamed for a sponsor. All station names were pasted over for this purpose, but renaming on the network plans did not take place due to the immense effort.
