history

In 2012, the Djiboutian government awarded the construction contract for the section from the Ethiopian-Djiboutian border to the Djiboutian capital to China Civil Engineering Construction , which also built part of the line on the Ethiopian side. The construction costs for the Djiboutian part are said to have amounted to 505 million US dollars, construction work began in July 2013.

The Nagad train station was built practically at the gates of the Djiboutian capital Djibouti near the village of the same name, the distance to the city center is a good 7 kilometers. The station received a monumental reception building with a porch and two side wings. In addition to the station building, the station facility itself includes a platform edge for passenger trains and a larger facility for freight trains, some of which can continue to the port station of Djibouti. On the roof of the station, the station name was placed in French ( Gare de Nagad ) and English ( Nagad Station ).

The official opening of the railway line took place on October 5, 2016, the first passenger trains to Addis Ababa started in early 2018. With the opening, the old inner-city station of Djibouti ( Gare de Djibouti-Ville ) of the Addis Ababa – Djibouti meter-gauge railway lost its function and became closed.

The station is operated by the Ethiopia Djibouti Railway , which is controlled by the Chinese for the first six years before the responsibility of the two countries involved is passed on.
