Map of the Arta region

The Arta region ( Arabic عرتا) is a region in southwestern Djibouti . The main town of the region is the city of the same name, Arta , another town is Loyada on the border with Somaliland / Somalia .

population

The region had exactly 42,380 inhabitants at the census on May 29, 2009. Of these, 11,043 were urban, 11,345 rural, 17,775 nomadic and 2,217 other.

history

The Arta region was under the law on decentralization and the status of the regions of 2002 from parts of the capital Djibouti City (400 km² in the south and west of today's urban area) and the then districts of Dikhil (1400 km² on the Gulf of Tadjoura with hinterland ), Tadjoura and Ali Sabieh . This step should officially serve the purpose of decentralization . The Afar opposition politician Ahmed Dini criticized, however, that the creation of the Arta region primarily served to strengthen the Issa - Somali ethnic group against the Afar.
