Obock ( Arabic أوبوك Awbūk , DMG Aubūk ) is a region in the north of Djibouti . It is named after its main town Obock , other places are Khor Angar and Laʼassa . Obock has about 27,000 inhabitants, most of whombelongto the Afar people.

The place Obock was initially the starting point for the French colonization of Djibouti, but was then given up in favor of Djibouti City . The area was initially administered as part of the Tadjoura region , but in 1963 the Obock region was separated as a separate region.

It borders Eritrea to the northwest, the Tadjoura region to the southwest and the Red Sea , the Bab al-Mandab and the Gulf of Aden to the east .

There are many salt lakes in the region . The We'ima Wenz river forms the border with Eritrea. 2008 saw near the coast and the offshore island of Doumeira to border conflicts between Djibouti and Eritrea .
