The station post office is a post office building of the Austrian Post in the state capital Linz . It's at Bahnhofplatz 10.

history

Between 1947 and 1948 the station post office was built by architect Josef Langhof . It is a striking three-storey building with a soaring clock tower designed as a staircase. The building forms the end of the station square. In 1955, Langhof also added the post bus departure point with a semicircular canopy supported by two conical columns in the typical style of the 1950s.

use

The building was used as a post office (postcode 4020) from the start. After restructuring and downsizing the main post office in Domgasse (4010), it also served as a post office. Until the opening of the new distribution center in Allhaming in 2014, it was also the post distribution center. The connected post bus departure point served until the opening of the new main train station with bus terminal in the state service center building in 2004 as a departure point for post bus busses with an ABC-Buffet restaurant , which is named after the post office stand designations A, B and C. The train buses, on the other hand, left their own bus station opposite the old arrival hall of the main train station. Today the former post bus departure point serves as a boarding point for coaches and long-distance buses. The buffet was closed.

Monument protection

Cancellation of the ABC buffet in November 2018

Due to the amendment of the Monument Protection Act in 2000, the post office buildings fell out of the general monument protection. Subsequent protection of this building did not seem legally possible, as much of the building's interior had already been structurally changed. As a result, the post office building, which is now empty except for one post office on the ground floor, and the post bus departure point are in acute danger of being demolished.

The semicircular canopy of the former post bus departure point and the former ABC buffet were demolished in November 2018.
