The railroad Center Rutland Rutland is a railway line in Vermont ( United States ). It is 2.86 kilometers long and is located in the urban area of Rutland . Most of the route, which was only used for freight traffic during its entire existence, has been closed, only a freight connection at the eastern end is still being served.

history

The line was built by the Pittsford and Rutland Railroad to connect the Clarendon and Pittsford Railroad and some freight customers to the Rutland freight yard and the main line of the Bennington and Rutland Railroad . The Clarendon & Pittsford leased the railway from the opening on July 2, 1890 and ran the operation. She finally acquired the line on November 13, 1911. There was no scheduled passenger traffic on the line, but there was the possibility of riding on the freight trains for a small fee. Quarry workers were also promoted to West Rutland.

In 1938, Clarendon & Pittsford sold the line from the Center Rutland passenger station to the Gleisdreieck at the Rutland freight yard to the Rutland Railroad , which closed this section in the same year except for a short section of track at the eastern end. After a strike on September 25, 1961, freight traffic in the entire Rutland network was suspended and the company was threatened with closure. However, the state of Vermont bought the train and leased it to the Vermont Railway , which resumed freight traffic on January 6, 1964. The 600 meter long section of the route, which is still used, is still operated by this company today. The short connecting track from Clarendon & Pittsford train station to the passenger train station in Center Rutland was used by Clarendon & Pittsford until 1988 and then closed.

Route description

The line branches off at Clarendon & Pittsford's former Center Rutland station in a triangular track from the company's main line, which has also been closed. It first crosses the Whitehall – Rutland railway line and then the Otter Creek . The river bridge is still there today. Immediately afterwards, the Center Rutland station is reached, where there was a connecting track to the other railway lines. The route to the Rutland freight yard then continues over Tenney Brook and through southern Rutland. Here the route is built over in parts. It ran east along Forest Park Road. After the level crossing over Granger Street, the part that is still in operation begins. Shortly thereafter, the line joins the Rutland – Hoosick Junction railway line in a triangular track .
