Clarendon and Pittsford Railroad

The Clarendon and Pittsford Railroad (CLP) is a local railway company in Vermont ( United States ). It has existed since 1885 and has been a subsidiary of the Vermont Railway since 1972 .

history

Clarendon & Pittsford was founded on September 10, 1885 as a subsidiary of the Vermont Marble Company and built freight lines in and around Rutland to transport the marble mined there . The network, which was opened in July 1886, was mainly used for freight traffic from the start.

On May 26, 1890, the Pittsford and Rutland Railroad was founded, which intended to connect the Bennington and Rutland Railroad and the CLP in the urban area of Rutland . The 2.86-kilometer connecting line from Central Rutland to the Bennington & Rutland freight yard was opened in the same year. Even before construction began, on July 2, 1890, the CLP leased this railway company and finally acquired it on November 13, 1911.

Another connection to the existing rail network was also made by a branch line from Florence Junction to Florence on the Rutland Railroad . The Brandon and West Rutland Railroad , founded in 1901 and acquired on May 13, 1911, had built the short connecting line.

In 1925, the scant passenger traffic for the quarry workers ended and goods traffic continued. In November 1972, the Vermont Railway acquired the railway company and continued to operate it as a subsidiary. After the CLP had acquired the Rutland – Whitehall route from D&H in December 1983 , previous routes were closed. Of the original CLP network, only the former Brandon & West Rutland route from Florence Junction to Florence remained in operation. The Ethan Allen , an Amtrak express train that runs from Rutland to New York, runs once a day on the route acquired by D&H .

stretch

The 21-kilometer main line ran from Hollister through the urban area of Rutland to Albertson . A two-mile branch that crossed the main line at Florence Junction tied a nearby quarry. Another 2.86-kilometer line branched off the main line in a triangular track and led to the Rutland freight yard. These routes are now closed except for a short stretch near Florence. After purchasing the branch line to Rutland, Rutland – Hollister was the main line, while the Center Rutland – Albertson section became a branch line. The Whitehall – Rutland railway line, which is still in operation today , was acquired in 1983.

vehicles

The CLP currently has six diesel locomotives of different series: one EMD GP38-2 , two EMD GP38 , one EMD GP9 , one EMD GP16 and one EMD SW1500 . The locomotives were built in the 1960s and 1970s and some of them were acquired by other companies.
