The railway Charles River Ridge Hill is a railway line in Massachusetts ( United States ). It is around three kilometers long and is located in the urban area of Needham . The standard gauge line has been closed and dismantled.

history

In the 19th century, the settlement of Ridge Hill was a recreational hotel where tourists from the greater Boston area spent their summer weekends. To achieve this, the New York and New England Railroad built a branch line from Charles River Station to Ridge Hill, which opened in 1879. Passenger transport was only offered in summer. Passenger traffic was discontinued around 1885 and the line was shut down and dismantled in 1889.

Route description

The line branched off from the Back Bay – Harrisville railway line at Charles River Station and led west along the Charles River . The terminus was on Charles River Street, roughly level with Locust Lane.

passenger traffic

The 1881 summer timetable provided for five pairs of trains from Boston to Ridge Hill, as well as four other trains that only shuttled between Charles River and Ridge Hill and connected to Boston in Charles River.
